Aubrey Yifan Tang has been a musician all her life. Born in China, she began playing the violin at the age of four. As is typical for many children growing up in China, Aubrey didn’t choose what instrument to play; her parents chose for her, deciding on the violin. Luckily for everyone in California, in particular the participants in the program Education Through Music – Los Angeles (EMTLA), Aubrey fell in love with the violin and decided to share her skills beyond the concert hall.

Education Through Music-Los Angeles ensures that in-school music instruction is part of the core curriculum for every student. In its 12th year, it currently runs programs in 30 L.A. schools through weekly music education. Many schools, especially those in low-income communities, don’t have the funds to offer students a complete music program. EMTLA is dedicated to guaranteeing that all children, despite economic or social standing, get the music education they deserve.

Three years ago, Aubrey discovered EMTLA when she began studying for her Masters of Music in Violin Performance at California State University, Northridge.

Delighted by its mission, she auditioned for EMTLA and began serving as a volunteer teacher’s assistant, working with 4th grade string musicians in two schools. This position allowed her to help individual students learn a wide range of music fundamentals. It enabled her to provide the kids with technical support as well.

In addition, Aubrey volunteered at one of the organization’s after-school programs, where students gather and practice as an orchestra. The violinist also performed at EMTLA’s art and music festival fundraisers.

Whether teaching or performing, Aubrey’s aim is to help others learn about music and to have a good time doing it. In fact, her experiences with EMTLA helped her realize that she loves teaching children because of their vivid imaginations and freedom of expression. Aubrey says, “Teaching music with the kids is the most beautiful thing in the world.”

After graduating in May, Aubrey will continue her teaching and performing education through a doctoral program at the School of Music at Texas Tech University.
