“My intention is to be an example to others, giving them the hope that they too can do extraordinary things that they dream about and make their dreams become reality.”

In June 2018, Michael Davies-Hughes tackled 3,000 miles of road with just his legs and a pair of wheels. As a participant in the Riding for Reading program, he bicycled across America’s deserts, mountains and plains from California to Maryland: that’s 12 states in only 12 days. Which means 260 miles and 19 to 20 hours of riding, each day.

A passionate educator for 26 years, Michael made this epic bike ride to promote awareness for childhood literacy, a subject close to his heart. His volunteering efforts include raising $50,000 for Decade of Difference’s Early Literacy Partners Program. This program trains volunteers to teach reading and math one-on-one to students grades K-2, who need a little extra help. The volunteers serve 30 partner Humboldt County Schools.

When asked about the relationship between his ride and the students, Michael emphasizes how necessary it is to dream and visualize in life. Early literacy is essential for child development, he says. Studies have shown that kids are four times more likely to drop out of school if they’re unable to read by the fourth grade. The Early Literacy Partners Program encourages children to dream and visualize their future, by pulling up their reading and math proficiency levels.

Michael is not a young man and he’s not a pro-cyclist. He’s a regular guy with the all-consuming dream to ride a race that, when completed, will also make a difference in children’s lives through the funds it raised. His intention is to be an example to others, inspiring them to believe that they too can do something extraordinary — like turning their dreams into reality.

Michael would not have been able to take on the challenge of this cross-country bike race, or help children’s literacy programs, without the support of the community. If you would like to help Michael Davies-Hughes or his program, please check out his website.
